Reflection of Sound

Concept Explanation

Reflection of Sound

Reflection of sound wave: Like light, sound can also be made to change its direction and bounce back when it falls on a hard surface. The bouncing back of sound when it strikes a hard surface is known as reflection of sound. The reflection of sound does not require a smooth and shining surface like that of mirror, it can be reflected from any surface whether it is smooth or rough. Sound is reflected in the same way as light and follows the same laws of reflection, which are as follows:

1.    The incident sound wave (AO), the reflected sound wave (OB) and the normal (ON) at the point of incidence, all lie in the same plane.

2.    The angle of incidence (<AON) of sound is equal to the angle of reflection (<NOB) of sound.

Application of reflection of sound:

  • Reflection of sound is used to measure the distance and the speed of the underwater objects. This method is known as SONAR.
  • Working of a stethoscope is also based on the reflection of the sound. In a stethoscope, the sound of the patients heartbeat reaches the doctor's ear by multiple reflection of the sound.
  • The sound board is based on the reflection of the sound. Here, the sound waves are uniformly reflected can be seen in the auditorium. This help in improving quality.
  • The working of hearing is based on the reflection of sound. In hearing aid the sound waves are reflected into a slimmer area so as to direct the sound to the ear.
